About Me

alAn lincourt

I’m a rural American documentarian with a detail oriented eye, devoted to the small towns, working landscapes, and community rituals most people pass by without a second glance. From my home base in the heart of the Leather-Stocking Region of upstate central and rural NY, I create museum quality photographic panoramas and conventional sized wall art that honor county fairs, winter light displays, quiet towers, monasteries, lakes, and backroads as seriously as most photographers treat national parks. I’ve been working with digital photography since the early days, and that long relationship with the camera shows up in my work: meticulous stitching, multiple exposures, and finely judged exposure decisions come together to create images that are as technically rigorous as they are emotionally grounded. Whether it’s a 48" × 12" panorama of a fairground at dusk or a quiet shoreline on an Upstate lake, my photographs are built for close inspection—every texture, subtle color shift, and small human gesture is meant to hold up at scale. Traditional fine art landscape photography often chases pristine, empty vistas. I’m drawn instead to the places where real life unfolds. I’m just as interested in the glow of LED tunnels and carnival rides as I am in rock formations and shorelines. Holiday light displays, carousels, small-town towers, and modest rural churches are often dismissed as cluttered, kitschy, or too ordinary to be considered “serious” subjects. My work pushes back against that idea.

My guiding belief is simple: rural America’s everyday spaces are worthy of the same visual reverence as any tourist postcard location or Federal park destination. By applying panoramic composition, careful timing, and archival printing techniques to images of fairs, parades, historical landmarks, and local rituals, I turn them into what I think of as “everyday cathedrals”—places where memory, history, and community quietly gather. Every piece begins with observation and patience. I wait for the right light—the edge of dusk at a county fair, the hush of fresh snow on a winter path, the way a storm breaks over a small tower on the lake. Multiple exposures help me hold detail in both shadow and highlight, and careful post‑processing preserves the scene’s integrity while revealing its full visual depth. I produce the finished works as high‑resolution, museum‑quality prints for collectors who want art with both presence and place. Collectors often tell me they’re drawn first to the familiarity of my subjects: “I’ve been to a fair like that,” “that could be my hometown,” “we use to have a light display like this.” Then the scale and detail sink in, and there’s a realization that these scenes—so ordinary in memory—have been elevated into something enduring. That transformation is at the core of my practice: to show that our shared, local experiences deserve a place on the gallery wall. In a photographic world crowded with images of far‑off wonders, my work stays deliberately close to home. My panoramas are a quiet argument for looking again at the world just outside your door—and recognizing that the fairs, lakes, towers, and light‑strung streets of rural life are not background noise, but the main event.
